La Bénédiction Paternelle: today’s opportunity for a multi-celebratory blessing!

Happy New Year, UPRISE movement-makers! May you also be graced with a beautiful celebration of the Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God; the World Day of Peace, AND the First Friday of the Month! WHEW!!! What a day of multi-celebrating!

Mary as Christ’s Mother is also our Heavenly Mother and quite a “masterpiece of grace” as Fr. Hugon, a Dominican priest stated in 1929! I love this painting of Our Blessed Mary, Mother of God as I remember it hanging on the wall in my grandparents home, always serving as a source of great beauty and comfort to me as a child. Our Blessed Mother Mary certainly has blessed me and my family each and every day in so many ways, for which I am humbled and so grateful!

I can also recall being blessed by my Father with our family “blessing cup,” after each receipt of one of the sacraments, or a special occasion in our family. Receiving a blessing from my Dad I know has been part of the grace received that has impacted my faith life today!

Today on New Year’s Day, many French Catholics partake in a family tradition of La Benediction Paternelle, a Father’s Blessing, a gift to lovingly begin a new year! Even today’s First Reading from the Book of Numbers offers a meaningful New Year’s blessing to all of us: “The Lord bless you and keep you! The Lord let His face shine upon you and be gracious to you! The Lord look upon you kindly and give you peace!”

Who might you want to bless today with this or a similar blessing? What a wonderful tradition worth starting or continuing on New Years Day!
